The Dresden Files is a literary fantasy series written by author Jim Butcher. The series for many readers reaches a climax on the very last page of Changes (book 12) when the main protagonist Harry Dresden is shot by an unknown sniper from his boat. Harry Dresden isn’t able to get a look at the killer or unleash his death curse upon the assassin. Harry Dresden goes through an emotional change through the novel (hence the name) and indeed psychological trauma. Dresden’s life is ruined by his enemies and he loses everything.

The loss of his home, his family and his long gone girlfriend caused Harry physical and mental pain all through the novel, but good was to be salvaged at the end of Changes when Dresden finally gets an opportunity with Lieutenant Karrin Murphy, his friend and often his co-worker. The two make arrangements to go on a date, but before they can meet up for the date Harry Dresden is shot and his body falls into the cold icy waters of the infamous Lake Michigan.

Ghost Story is the thirteenth book in the series and focuses on Dresden’s next move. Harry is trapped in the place inbetween where he needs to be and he is informed by a man named Jack that he needs to find his own killer and solve his own murder before time runs out. Dresden is informed that grave circumstances could arise if he fails to catch the killer, as the killer will target the people he loves next. Dresden needs to save his family; Thomas Raith, Maggie Dresden and Ebenezer McCoy from certain annihilation with no body or magic to work with. I guess that’s why they call it a ghost story.

it is important to realize that in his time Dresden has vanquished many nasties away from Chicago, so how is he going to react when he meets up with some of his old foes in the world imbetween? Harry Dresden has to- “pull off the ultimate trick without magic…” Just when he had though his problems were all over, they are really just beginning.

Jim Butcher has began another book (Book 14) named Cold Days which will be based on Harry’s deal with Mab, to be the Winter Knight.
