Sandra is brought to DC while being interrogated. As the Custer Agent she was the last line of defense, that failed. She was automatically a suspect.
Sandra grabbed her right hand as it shook. She smiled, “I’m going to be OK, I just get the shakes at times.”
The agent continued, “He used your weapon on their legs, he used the Custers on them. They are in really bad shape. As best we can determine he fired four rounds into each of the girls, eight into Mitzi. The agent he fired on took four in the chest.”
Sandra put her head down, “What did I do wrong? I had to do something wrong, he got through. My job was last stand. I should have been dead for him to get through.”
The agent put his hand on her shoulder and pulled her up, “As for what you did wrong, you were on duty when it happened. The guys back there are saying no matter who was in the room it would have happened. You were to protect against someone who got through the perimeter, not someone who was already there.”
“But my job was to protect.” She began sobbing. The agent left her continue for about three minutes, then pulled her head up.
“That’s enough. You needed that. Now we need you back on duty. We lost three agents last night to the jack rocks and one other tangled with a dog. Our people are scattered all over the area cleaning up, another one got hurt on a jack rock this morning. Jack Senser was shot in the room. He’s dead. We’re short too many people and there are tons of threats. If you can handle it you’re headed for Walter Reed you’ll pick up protection of the girls.”
She nodded.
“We have a weapon and gear for you if you feel up to it.”
“I’ll make it.” He handed her an automatic and a package of the ammunition she recognized, the Custer ammunition holder. She pulled out the weapon, verified it was loaded, cycled a round into the chamber, put it on safety and looped the holster on her shoulder.
“Custer ammo. I’m going back with the girls?”
“The president has asked that if possible you return to guarding his girls. He thinks they will need someone familiar.”
“How bad are they hurt?”
“Bad. Really bad.”
The air in the car had changed, this was no longer an inquisition, they were satisfied she had done her duty and the system had failed, not her. He discussed the duty and briefed her on her role. She slept for about an hour. It was still dark when they pulled up at Walter Reed. They went in. She was taken to the suite that now housed the president’s family. Sandra went in and signed the log at 4:32 AM. Her presence was acknowledged by the other agents. Apparently they knew she was coming and she had been cleared.
