Around the country there is turmoil.
The reporter backed out of the room.
At the door she met a man, “I’m Dr. Bardy. That report on a surgery is real. That lady in there is loyal, she nearly bled to death and you were accusing her of wrongdoing. You people should be ashamed of your actions.” He shook his head, turned and walked away. In the confusion the camera was left on, his words went live from coast to coast.
Sandra and Jaci saw the report too. Jaci looked at Sandra. “I liked the way he handled that. I just wished someone had punched the reporter. Gloria is a really nice lady. But I know an Army Ranger would not hit a woman.” She looked at Sandra, “But don’t tell anyone, you’re tops in my book. Now can you help me up? I have to get moving. I need to learn to get from one place to another with this thing,” she pointed to the pylon, “and I have to do it for myself.”
“You will.”
“And I have to do it for them, mom, dad and Judi.” Her eyes glazed. “I have to show dad it’s going to be all right and I have to show Judi she can do it or she’ll give up. We can’t let anyone think they can break us.”
“What about your mom?”
Her face dropped, “I don’t know what I can do about her. She’s going to have to do it on her own. They told me that loosing my right leg is a little tougher than the left, because of driving. But to lose both, I don’t know if…”
“Your mom will be fine. And the more you do to show her you are going to be fine, the more she will be fine. When she can quit worrying about you and Jaci she will be able to concentrate on her recovery.”
