The situation in the country deteriorates. The president considers martial law.

Dave came in later in the day.  He had a concern.  He did not want the news of their injuries to leak. The attacks on Gays were getting worse.  If the country found out how bad the women were hurt it may get worse.  He cringed as he thought about it.  “How could it get worse?”  With the attacks on the gays they were fighting back.  Some on both sides were armed.  Lives were being sacrificed every night.  The mood of the country was getting nasty and the continued irresponsible statements by the press and both gay leaders and gay bashers were serving only to inflame the situation.  It almost seemed like the press wanted it to get bad, they reported the worst things.  Last night there were over two hundred and fifty verifiable assaults, over thirty of them involved firearms, many more involved knives.   Men and women died on both sides of the proverbial fence.

In the worst event four men confronted two women they suspected were lesbians on the street in Chicago.  Two of them pushed the one woman to the pavement and started to pummel her.  The other two moved menacingly toward the other woman who worked as an armed security guard for the county government.  Because of threats from her job she carried her weapon all the time.  She pulled the automatic pistol and ordered them to stop.  Two of them advanced on her and she fired four times at her two attackers.  One fell, mortally wounded, two bullets in his chest. He died before the EMT’s arrived.  The other man caught the first round in his stomach and the other in his left lung.  He didn’t make it to the hospital alive.  As he went down she turned to see the third man hit her friend with his fist.  She fired twice, the first bullet hit his neck the second entered his heart.  He was dead before he hit the pavement.  The forth man tried to retreat, the two shots she fired hit him in the back, one destroyed his left kidney, the other severed his spine a couple inches below the waist.  When the police arrived they found the one woman nursing a gash on her head and bruises, the result of the beating and a fall while the other sat on the curb holding a gun and sobbing.  They were sisters, out shopping together.  They hugged and the men thought they were lesbians.  Another assault on two men who lived together resulted in the arson of a home, two people died in that attack.  One of the men came home as they were torching the house.  He had a shotgun in his car.  He tried to stop them and in the process killed two of them.

Dave knew that soon his wife and daughters must come home.  In fact it was desirable for them to come home within three weeks.  Dave was sure that the time to break the news would not be before that time.  And if the girls were kept under wraps for too long rumors would only get worse.  It might create suspicion that they were dead.  They must appear in public and soon.   But to have them appear risked someone noticing.  How could anyone not notice the missing legs?   What was that public revelation going to do to his girls?
