Mitzi takes a stand – without legs.

“I can be difficult too.  If you want me to try to walk on these things,” She wrapped the one pylon with her knuckle, “you will get them made four inches longer than they are and you will do it now.  I don’t get out of the chair till you do.  What don’t you understand about that?”

“But.”

“No buts about it.  Do it now.”

The tech shrugged.  Although it was a stupid place to draw a line in the sand, she had done it.  Mitzi had taken the first step in getting her life back.  It would have seemed a vain gesture to anyone else but to someone who understood the dynamics of losing both legs, it was easy to understand.  She was taking charge.  It didn’t matter that the battle was of no value and in fact was counterproductive, she was fighting and once she started fighting the battle could be won.

“We’ll get you back into the chair and take the pylons off then we can see if we can lengthen them.”

“I’m comfortable here, you get them made longer or I wait.  I’m sure you have some spare parts back in that machine shop of yours you call a medical facility.  Now if you are going to make my legs longer you better get the lead out.  Comprende?”  Mitzi was taking charge of her life for the first time since the shooting.  It probably was a bad place and time to do it but anywhere was better than nowhere and now was better than later.

The technician got a small tool and came over, “Since I’m going to do it I might as well show you how to take your legs off now.”  With that he lifted her leg and showed her the place to put the tool and how to loosen the pylon from the socket.  He pulled first one and then the other pylon and then left the room with them.

Jaci was first to get into the therapy session.  She walked with her crutches putting much of her weight on the pylon as directed.  When she made several round trips they took her to the parallel bars.  They positioned her in them and she walked from one end to the other then turned and walked back holding to the bars.  Amy clapped.  It was great.

While she was walking the bars the technician came back with her mother’s longer pylons and attached them.  With that done he lengthened her crutches and moved her to near the parallel bars.
