What a tangled web!
“That’s good. What do we do?”
Mitzi explained the plan. “So we need you to allow them to make casts of your legs then they mate them to my stumps so it looks like my legs are in casts. Judi and Jaci are close enough in size to exchange legs but you’re going to have to be my double on it.”
Tracy smiled for the first time in the conversation, “This will never work. Everyone will know.”
“Why?”
“They will never believe that these are your legs. Mine are much nicer.” They all laughed and she asked, “What do I do next?”
Amy handed her a gown and pointed to a changing room. I suggest you go to the bathroom then put this on. Take everything off. I’ll have you a wheel chair waiting.”
“I don’t need one.”
“You will soon. We need to get the chair adjusted for your comfort. You will be in it for the rest of the day.”
“Should I take everything off, I’m having my period.”
“Can you use a tampon?”
“Sure.”
“There should be some in the bathroom, they are king size, it might be a little tight.”
“Oh, joy.”
Within ten minutes she was coming out of the dressing room with only a gown. Amy motioned her to the chair. There was an absorbent pad on it. “Let me adjust this so you are comfortable in it after we cast you.” She adjusted the foot rests to certain positions.
“I have to ride?”
“We require you to ride now and soon you will need to ride. You’ll not be walking till the casts come off.”
The procession left the exercise area and went to the casting room nearby. A man and a woman they had not met before came in. “We have a lot of casting to do today. We first need to get a new socket cast for each of you. Mitzi, since we need to do two legs we want to do you first. They soaked several strips of plaster and took off her left pylon. They wrapped her stump carefully; held it in place and waited for it to set. While it was setting they removed the right pylon and casted it too. As soon as a cast was removed her stump was carefully cleaned and the pylon was reattached.
