As this was starting, Tracy was placed on a casting table.  Amy and one of the men began casting Tracy’s legs.  Soon they too were covered with fiberglass.  The legs were set nearly straight with the feet pointed up. 

While they were casting Tracy’s legs the other men made two casts of each of the daughter’s stumps and casted their uninjured legs, giving them more of a bend than they had Tracy’s.  The bent leg would make the girls more mobile, the straight leg would be a little more cumbersome when sitting but it would allow Mitzi to stand if she wanted to after the casts were set.  When all of this was done the man and woman went back to Mitzi and made a second cast of each of her stumps.  That done they made a second set of Jaci and Judi’s stumps.  These were set aside in case there was a problem.  They were all taken back to the room, an additional bed had been placed next to Mitzi’s and Tracy was placed in it.  She had to be helped from the chair to the bed using a lift with a sling.  The three women with the casts would not be able to put weight on them until they hardened.  They asked how long they would have the casts on.  Amy told them they would be taken off late in the evening.

They were fed supper.  Jaci was chafing at the bit.  She needed to be up and moving.  By noon she had to use the bathroom.  The nurse came with a bedpan, she refused.  “I’ll be careful with the cast,” she offered and slid herself with her feet off the side of the bed.  She slid her crutches where she could use them to lever herself up and pulled herself up on the pylon while holding the other leg off the floor.  It was awkward and she had to have help getting on the commode but she made it.  The trip back to the bed was difficult too but she was able to make it.  She was watched by Mitzi, Tracy and Judi.  Within a few minutes Judi decided to try.  She was not as capable and needed more help but when she got back in bed all three of the others were clapping.  Mitzi had been using the bed pan up till now but within an hour she had to go and she was determined to do what her daughters had done.  After all, if they could get to the bathroom on one peg leg, with their other leg in a cast, she should be able to do it with two peg legs.  She managed to get to the bathroom and back on crutches with minimal help, the first time she had been able to do this since the shooting.   Again there was a round of applause.
