Nero fiddled while Rome burned. The David Donaldson family planned a charade.
Across the country the day was worse than any before. The whole country was near to chaos. The term ‘civil war’ was being used by the media and that was only making it worse. The president was being pressured to call for martial law. He resisted because he was sure that would push the situation over the edge. Many newscasters called the rioting worse than the late sixties. One thing he was sure would help was to have the first family be seen looking well. He asked how the project had gone. They told him it was still in progress.
After the evening meal they were taken to therapy. The casts were carefully cut off of Tracy and the girls by slitting them up the side. The hole at the toe was taped shut and the cut sides were taped to hold them together. They filled them to just above the knee with insulating foam. It was light and made them more sturdy. They were set aside till for the foam to harden. As soon as Tracy was free of her casts she moved to help Amy with anything she could. As soon as the foam set she helped remove the tape from the casts and clean off the small amount of foam that had oozed out of the saw slit in the cast.
Amy worked with the girls and one of the men with Mitzi. They removed their temporary sockets and slid on the new casts of their stumps. A connector had been added to hold them on, but it was a thin cable to connect to the belt not the more visible strap. That done they slid the cast over the plaster socket and began fastening it with more fiberglass wrap. A strip of padding was wrapped around the thigh and covered with fiberglass to make it look like a real long leg cast. Amy noticed a problem. The cast had no toes. She found two pairs of socks, cut off about three inches of the toes and slipped them over the ends of the casts and put some foam inside the cast and sock to be sure it stayed on and looked full.
The process was repeated until they were done. They were placed in their wheelchairs and taken back to the room. Tracy had been talking to Amy during the session. After they were done she remained in PT for a while with Amy, then rode up to the room in the wheel chair.
