Day 9
They woke early in the morning to the White House beautician’s voice. “I’m to get you ready for your press conference.” The next hour was a flurry of activity but when it was done the three women were in their beds with their legs elevated. Everything that looked medical except the crutches and Mitzi’s wheel chair were moved to the guest room. Tracy would stay in the other room. Even without the braces she was not to be there. White House press representatives came in to be with each of the women, the first lady’s press secretary was there to run the conference. The game plan was laid out. They were dressed for it and they were ready.
Three reporters, one still photographer, and two TV pool camera men were allowed in. The White House did not know the still photographer was Jason Lehman until he came in. A no-name photographer had been selected but he had a problem with his camera at the last minute and Jason was selected to replace him. The press secretary read a prepared speech. Jason looked up as she read it and thought, “Boring. No substance.” He immediately knew the truth was being hidden in the chaff. The report was the truth. It had no lies. They just conveniently omitted very significant parts of the story. The women looked great with their casted legs up in the slings where everyone could see them. There was not one mention of a broken leg but everyone assumed this. In the middle of the conference the nurse unhooked the cast supports, Judi and Jaci got out of bed and crutched to their mom’s bed. She transferred to the wheelchair and they posed for the cameras and answered questions. Just before the conference was over Mitzi was helped out of the chair and was able to stand with her crutches for a photo with the girls. They were dressed in short nightgowns that showed their legs and casts well. In the makeup they looked more like they were ready for a date than in a hospital. The photos, video footage, and the reports were made available to the various media.
