“What if I told you we can have our cake and eat it too?”
“Sounds good, but how?”
“I called the White House today for an interview.”
“Oh, great. She just calls the White House to talk to the First Lady and she gets an audience with the first lady and probably the president too, no, it’s not the first lady and the president, that’s Mitzi and Dave to you. You’re kidding of course. But then she did visit you in the hospital.”
“No. I’m not kidding, I called.”
He shook his head, “You have brass ones that big.” He made a shape the size of a basketball, “Two of them. I don’t know how you even walk. You have to be a guy. Let me see them. I might be able to get an annulment of our marriage on the grounds of deception. You have to be crazy. You just can’t call the White House and get an audience with the First Lady.”
“OK, berate my anatomy but I get things done. And they’re sending a secret service agent for us tomorrow.”
“So we can’t tell about it? Are you sure you can trust me?”
“Silly, if that was the case I would not have told you about it.”
“You would have kept it from me?”
“To avoid the frustration.”
“Frustration, sure I’m frustrated. My wife can call the first lady and get an audience but we can’t report a story.”
“I called the White House. I told the secretary to have Mrs. Donaldson get back to me. It was of great urgency that I was the reporter she needed.”
“Oh, you just tell the president’s wife she needs to see you and she calls back.”
“When she visited me in the hospital she told me some day she may need a reporter she could trust and if she did I would probably get the story of my life. Yes I called her and I also told them to tell her I had some information about her and the girls’ legs that came into my possession today that conflicted with the news conference.”
“So. Then what?”
“I hit a nerve. The secretary called back in less than ten minutes. We have an appointment with the first family tomorrow morning at ten.”
They had their evening meal and sat down to recap the day.
