The seas rocked them as if they were babes in a cradle. Thomas was worried, but knew he had everything under control…..or had he?

The evening was a cold one as Thomas walked around the deck of the ship. He thought hard about his choices, moving his family and business to the states. It wasn’t at all an easy one, but everything pointed to making a great gain being the first of it’s kind there. Thomas drew his jacket closer, feeling the chill run through his body. Gazing upon the water and into the black he thought hard and long about his family.  How was it that they were willing to make this journey with him, not knowing what the outcome will be?  He stood at the rail and watched as the water slapped against the hull of the ship.  A sound came upon him as he turned quickly and found his wife behind him.

” I’m sorry, I finally got the children asleep and wanted to join you up here.” she says as she grabs her husbands arm, bringing herself closer to him.  He tightens his arm, showing how nice it was to have her beside him and they both stood at the railing looking out into the darkness.

” You seem worried about this, I wish you would talk to me about what you’re thinking,” she says to Thomas. Thomas continues to look out into the dark and with his other arm, he reaches over to his wife’s hand, holding it close to him.  The trip continued on and the children were becoming a bit sick from all the waves and bad weather they were having. The day finally came when land appeared over the horizon. Excitement filled the air as everyone prepared to leave the ship. The children were so excited that they screamed with happiness, not that the trip was over, but that they had survived.  It wasn’t easy crossing the oceans and the stories most men told in England scared them most of the time. Now they can tell their stories to their children when the time comes of the crossing to America. Mrs. White, eager to get off ship, stood at the door of the cabin, double checking that everything had been packed and ready for the move.  She was now finally going to be on solid ground and finally off that dreadful ship. Never again will she travel like this, no matter what. America was her new home and she will make due, however things go, she will never cross that ocean again.  Thomas held onto the children’s hands as they lowered the plank for the passengers to disembark and Mrs. White stood behind them carrying her small cases. Here was the first day of the rest of her life, she thought to herself and as they walked off the ship, she never looked back. .
