Tirese is a normal teenage guy. He’s got a girlfriend, a loving family and lots of friends. He also has a cyst on his leg. When he goes to have it removed from the hospital, he becomes the patient of a cruel experiment, and an epic saga of personal saga and family vendettas begins to unfold. The very first chapter of the first book in the trilogy. If you liked Eragon, Harry Potter, or Animorphs, you’ll like this.

Chapter 1: Exposure

Tirese Bolstereli felt young and free at last. Well, maybe not completely free- after all, he was on his way to the hospital for surgery. He had a small, benign cyst on the inside of his left leg which he was going to get excised. It would be simple surgery- he wasn’t even going into the OR. He was nervous something was going to go wrong, but this could not stop his never-ending carefree attitude. He had recently gotten his license, and his parents had mustered up enough money to buy him a car for his 16th birthday. He was driving his baby- a blue 2005 Ford Mustang GT- for the first time.

As he cruised down Interstate 95 approaching 70 miles per hour, Tirese felt untouchable. He thought that nothing in the world could hurt him. The thought of a hospital trip did not scare him, and he was confident that he would soon be on his way back to his house to spend time with his parents, kid sister, and girlfriend.

As he made his way off the interstate and arrived at the hospital ten minutes later, a strange emotion overcame him again and again. Tirese could not help feeling that something awful was nearing. It was a simple surgery though, and if anything bad were to happen in the future, it surely wouldn’t have to do with the surgery. Tirese found a place to park in the front for surgery patients and went inside to the Outpatient Surgery Room.

Tirese pushed the door open and walked up to the sign in desk. Before he could say who he was, though, the receptionist smiled in his direction and said, “Ah, yes, young Mr. Bolstereli. The hospital staff have all been expecting you. Your parents have already completed the required paperwork, so you may go right into Exam Room 2 and await your procedure. Have a pleasant morning.” It was obvious to Tirese that the receptionist had been conditioned to say all this.

“Thank you, have a nice day,” Tirese commented back. “What a strangely nice staff member,” he muttered. He went through the double doors into a long, narrow hallway with more doors going off to either side. Even numbered rooms were on the right while odds were off to the left. The high numbered rooms were nearer to the double doors, so Tirese had to walk all the way down the long corridor and hang a right at the last room in order to reach the room. He had another strange feeling while walking, but shrugged it off as nerves before a big event.

A team of nurses along with a tall, fit man greeted him. “Hello, I’m Dr. Campbell, and I’ll be performing your surgery today. The procedure we’ll be performing today is fairly simple. The type of cyst you have can be easily drained by sticking a special type of syringe in and merely draining it. If you have no questions, we can put you on local anesthetics right now and begin the procedure.”

Tirese felt a bit rushed by the whole thing. In a matter of minutes, he had been accepted into the hospital’s care and seen by the surgeon. He had never been in a hospital before, but Tirese had fully expected to wait at least an hour before even being called up to the front desk to fill out release forms for the operation. They must be in a hurry to move along because its such an insignificant procedure, Tirese reassured himself. “I’m all ready doc, numb me up and let’s get this show on the road.”
