Music and dancing is a part of the culture of Burma. Ritual melodies and dancing continue for hours, generally organized by wealthy members of the community.

Chapter 2  — Part 1) – Continued

It was time for the Feast of Lights, at the end of the rainy season, known as Thadingyut.

Ma Hla kept seeing the man she secretly loved in the marketplace.  She was sure he was already showing the subtle signs of interest in her, for they often smiled at each other.   It did not take too long before they began talking to each other.

“My name is Ma Hla, what’s yours?” she asked.

“Maung Po.”  There was a slight pause. “You have a nice name,” he flattered.  “You are beautiful, as the name implies. “Where do you live?”

“Not far away from the river,” she replied.  “Where do you live?”

“In the next village, on the other side of the river,” he said.

”Do you come here very often?”

“Yes.  My sister couldn’t do any shopping.  So I volunteer to do it for her.”

       “Is she sick?”

       “She’s paralyzed.”

       ”Oh,  I’m so sorry!”

”Are your parents living with you?”

       ”No. They’re dead.”

When they parted, she was confident that he liked her, and that their conversation would mark the beginning of a fruitful relationship.

A week later, when they met again, she asked him to come over to her house and meet her father. She wanted him to feel at home in his presence.

She wasted no time letting her father know that she was expecting a visitor that day, somebody she loved and admired.

Her father noticed the radiant smile on her face.  “I knew it that some day the fly would be attracted to the light,” he remarked, as he held her hand. “Is he a good man?”

         “Yes.”

         ”And does he love you?”

          “I am sure he does.”

          “Where did you meet him?”

          ”In the market.”

U Tin Maung was wise and considerate, in spite of his rigid discipline.  He held on to such a philosophy throughout his life, adhering to the concept of  virtues that embraced everything that the soul desired most, such as trust and confidence.  He appreciated his daughter’s feeling toward the man she admired and did not ask any further questions as to his character.
