Now that the Japanese had occupied Rangoon, those of British extraction, as well as many of the Burmese intellectuals began to fear that, some day, they might be interned and subjected to harassment and torture.
Ma Shwe’s advice that she should now bury all of it somewhere around the bungalow had caused her to wake up to the reality that it wasn’t the best idea to leave her assets where it was concealed. She considered Ma Shwe’s advice to be constructive and felt that it would be realistic to have these buried where their discovery would be unlikely.
”I think you should pick a spot under the large tree in the garden where the Buddha’s statue sits,” Ma Shwe suggested. “That, in my opinion, would be the safest place to bury your assets.”
“Why do you suppose that it would be safer there than anywhere else?” Rose asked.
”Mainly because of the statue under the tree. The Japanese are quite superstitious and would definitely stay away from that spot where the statue sits. It’s like a double indemnity.”
“How clever! When can we start digging?” Rose asked anxiously.
“There’s no sentry around yet. I think we should start digging when it’s dark,” Ma Shwe suggested.
That night, Ma Shwe and Rose made sure that no sentry was anywhere in sight. Maung Po began digging. The jewels that were kept in a steel case were buried deep in the ground, about three feet deep. A large pebble was placed on the spot beneath which the jewels were lodged under a tree, in proximity to the sitting statue of Buddha.
