Rose was finally free from Chang’s control. Maung Ba assured her that she would be safe staying in his apartment and that he would do anything to protect her from harm. Maung Ba insisted that Rose should stay in his apartment where she would be safe. In order to insure her safety, Maung Ba suggested that nobody should know about it; not even Tan and Virginia.
Tan greeted him warmly the following day at the office. “How does the love-bird feel this morning?” he insinuated.
”The love-bird feels great!” Maung Ba replied.
”It’s great to be in love, isn’t it?” Tan continued.
”Birds are forever in love with their surroundings,” Maung Ba said. “Nature meant it to be so.”

”I have good news,” Rose said to Maung Ba.
“Where are you calling from, Rose?” Maung Ba inquired. He was surprised to get a call from her as he had no telephone at home.
”From the post office, across the street,” Rose said. “I needed some stamps.”
”You should be careful,” Maung Ba warned.
“Not any more,” Rose said. “Chang is murdered. “
”That’s good news,” Maung Ba said. ”How do you know?”
”It’s in the papers — the Rangoon Gazette.”
Maung Ba could hardly wait to convey the news to Tan after he had hung the receiver.
