Maung Ba felt at home with his job. He began working in an atmosphere of congeniality and cooperation. With Tan’s help, he managed to familiarize himself with many aspects of his work.
The Lion and the Sun – Chapter 5 – The British Lion (Cont’d)
Maung Ba’s relationship with Tan on his first day of work was extremely pleasant and his position in the supply department was such that it appeared as if he wasn’t constantly under supervision. Tan pointed out the necessary aspects of his job which didn’t take long to grasp.
When Maung Ba entered Cecil Moncreif’s room to hand him some papers, the latter greeted him with a warm smile and words of encouragement. Mr. Moncreif’s radiant personality seemed to transmit subtle rays of joy in his heart. What Maung Ba observed, as he stood there in the plush, carpeted room, was a perfectly uncommon aura of delight surrounding the Scotsman, seated at his large, shiny desk of solid teak.
Tan was happy that Maung Ba’s adjustment to his job was quick and pleasant. “We have many facilities here,” he informed Maung Ba. “For starters, you can join the employees’ club. You’ll make a lot of friends and participate in certain sports from time to time. You can talk freely on many subject.”
“You mean even talk politics?” Maung Ba asked.
”Not politics,” Tan replied, We talk about sports, philosophy, and even love and occasionally, religion.”
”That’s good!” Maung Ba remarked. ”It’s so incredible….I mean things are looking so bright for me!”
“Listen, my friend,” Tan replied. “Life has its ups and downs. One never knows what the future holds for us.”
“How true!” Maung Ba agreed.
