Maung Ba’s success in finally getting a job through his friend, Tan, was a source of consolation, though he was concerned about the plight and predicament of many of his compatriots.

The Lion and the Sun – Chapter 4 – (The British Lion) – Cont’d.

It was very late when Maung Po returned home that evening.  He was so exhausted  that he felt he was about to collapse.  Ma Hla rushed to his side with a glass of water.  When he finally felt better, Maung Ba wasted no time letting him know about his success and that there would be no need for him to continue working as a rickshaw-puller.

Maung Po was delighted, but wasn’t pleased about his brother-in-law’s suggestion to stop working as a rickshaw-puller. “What do you suggest I do?” he asked.  “I’m a farmer and a rice-cultivator, nor do I have an English education like you do.”

“You can be a vendor,” Maung Ba suggested.  “I can set you up in your own little business.  It’s better than what you’re doing now.”

”Easier said than done,” Maung Po replied tersely.

”Listen to Maung Ba,” Ma Hla intervened. “A lot of people make a good living this way.”

“Let’s wait and see how Maung Ba fares with his job,” Maung Po suggested.  “It’s too early to decide just yet.”

“Which means that you’re not going to do what Maung Ba has suggested,” Ma Hla mourned.

“Not until I’m sure that his job is secure,” Maung Po concluded.

Ma Hla was persuaded to stop working. She realized that the stress she was experiencing on her job, could eventually prove to be deleterious to her welfare, considering that she was already in the final month of her pregnancy.
