It was supposed to be the perfect plan…
Ares lay in bed and he could barely believe his own ears as he heard it, a call outside the window told him his plan had been working. Barely a day had gone by and already they were lowering another mole, the order would soon be restored. He sat up from his bed like a child at Christmas and ran to the window to witness it.
Now he could barely believe his own eyes. There was a mole standing over the well. A mole, of all people, was lowering THE mole he had wanted most in that hole. “I knew it wasn’t a mistake to let that one return.” he thought to himself, “He shall be my new captain of the guard. I shall give him a medal for his accomplishment, and when the villagers see how much he is respected all shall be under my control once again.”
Ares strode proudly out to the front of the crowd. He approached the hole and stood just behind Galileo, beaming as if he could take credit for the catch. His hand was placed firmly on Galileo’s shoulder which made Galileo very uneasy. Then he whispered in his ear, “ You shall be greatly rewarded for this. Whatever you do, be sure that he doesn’t get out.”
“This wasn’t part of the plan.” thought Galileo, “What is Ares going to do to me if things go as Longfellow said they would?” It was like being under the grip of the devil himself. He tried not to cringe as he held onto Longfellow, who at this time was putting up a very theatrical struggle so as to give the villagers more time to think. It was getting worse for Galileo; he looked to the crowd gathering and they did not seem to be reconsidering anything at all.
Almost ceremoniously they passed a barrel up for the lowering. It was like they all had the same idea and it spread from the back. Galileo could see them whispering to one another and smiles gathering on their faces when they took the barrel in hand. Then, as always during a lowering the chanting started up. “ Throw him in the hole- throw him in the hole- throw him in the hole!” He was sure that Ares being present wasn’t helping the situation. It was now quite clear that the plan was not going to work.
