Carly’s life is changing once again as she sets off on a new journey.
Light shone down through the thick leaves like little spotlights on the leaves below. The shade was cool and birds were singing as Carly wandered through the woods around Maybelle’s house. She had never seen anything quite so beautiful as these woods. Delicate ferns spread their fronds like arms reaching to the heavens while little while flowers played peak-a-boo in between shamrock shaped leaves. Everywhere giant trees stood like sentinels, watching over the life below.

She felt as though she was in another world, but I guess in a way, she was. Since the events of a few nights ago, so much had changed for Carly. She no longer had her mother, and she had been told that she was to be queen of a land that she had never really known exsisted. She stood watching two chipmunks play tag, lost in thought, and enjoying the cool air. She didn’t hear him approach but somehow sensed that someone was there.
“Hello, My Lady. I am asked to bring you back to the house.”
Carly turned at his voice and looked into the face of a very handsome young man with the most stunning blue eyes she had ever seen. She had never met him before and though he had called her “My Lady” she wasn’t ready to go with him until she knew it was real. She trusted very few people these days. As if sensing her uncertainty, he held out a roll of parchment to her. Eyes never leaving his face, she took it from him and opened it. Carly read quickly then said, ” I know my own way back. You may leave and tell Kiev I am on my way.”
“My Lady, I am asked to bring you back myself.”
“I don’t need an escort! Now go!” She was getting a bit angry with him, she wasn’t ready to be around anyone yet and wanted a few more minutes to herself as she walked back to the house.
“As you wish.” At that he turned and strode from the little clearing he had found her in. She breathed a sigh of relief, waited a few moments for her stomach to settle, then walked out the way he had.
At the house she found him sitting outside the door, as though he was waiting for her. She barely glanced at him as she went through the door. Inside Kiev and the rest of the council were waiting for her.
” Carly, please sit. We have much to tell you and little time to waste.” Kiev motioned toward a chair at the table. She crossed the room to the old wooden table and took a seat next to Maybelle.
” What’s going on? Why is everyone here again?”
” Carly we have gotten word that King Aros is on his way here to try and stop you from taking over his throne. We must get you out of these woods and to a safer place. He is ruthless and will stop at nothing to get to you. It was him who sent the beast to kill your mother and destroy your home. We believe that they were after you and they just got there too late.”
” I thought this was the safest place for me. Where do you suggest I go and who is going to get me there?”
” The young man outside is here to escort you to the Alero Mountains. There you will find safety and trainers who will help you hone your magic and learn to fight.” Kiev told her.
” Wait. You’re saying that I am to go with him?” She pointed toward the door. ” How is he alone supposed to protect me if we are ambushed by Aros’ soldiers?”
” Garrett is more than you think. He is one of the finest magicians and fighters we have. You will be safest with him. On the way he will teach you to fight and help you practice your own magic.”
Carly finally agreed to go, although she wasn’t happy about it. As she was packing what few belongings she had, Kiev knocked on her bedroom door.
” I know you do not wish to leave this place. I am sorry, but we must protect you in any way we can. I have something your father would have wanted you to have.”
He held out a long package wrapped in cloth. She took it to the bed and unwrapped it. The sword seemed to shimmer in the darkness of her room. The silver blade was engraved with a delicate scroll pattern and the handle was a deep blue that felt warm to the touch.
” This was your father’s sword. It was made for him by the elves and he would have wanted you to have it. Garrett will teach you to fight with it and you will keep it with you at all times.”
” It is beautiful Kiev. It doesn’t look like it was ever used in battle.”
” When the elves make a sword it is woven with their magic and only another elf-made sword can cause any harm to it. Carly, your father was one of the elves. Your power is as strong as it is because of that, and because of the power your mother held. Your father wanted you to have this when it was time. Now it is time for you to be going. Always watch your back and be safe. I will see you again soon, I promise. You must promise me that no matter what news comes to you, you will not try to return here.”
” I cannot promise you that I will never return to these woods. You are all part of my life now and I will learn as you asked, but I will also do everything in my power to protect my family. I will go because you asked me to and I will see you again.” With that Carly picked up her belongings and the sword and headed out the door. Her stomach did a small flip when Garrett looked at her and she resolved that she will not fall for him.
Carly hugged Maybelle and thanked her for everything telling her she would see her again soon, then she turned away and followed Garrett away from the house and through the woods. She looked back once more at the towering tree which held her temporary home and the group of people standing there. In her heart she vowed that she would be back and that she would work to be the best Queen she could be.
