The police begin the process of finding the shooter and taking him off the street.
Detectives Dean Sadler and Mark Norris were assigned to lead the investigation of the shootings. Within an hour they had listed several suspects. Two other detective teams were assigned with them. The list of nine suspects was divided between the three teams. All nine men had threatened to kill police officers. Most had no particular officer they wanted to shoot. They just hated cops. Jason Jenkins and Dave Johnson picked up their list and left. Ronald Morris and Don Jacobs were on a call late the night before; they would be in to start their list in an hour.
As Dr. Barton began writing the reports he turned on the radio. The nine A.M. news report interrupted the music. The first report made his activities of the last hour relevant. Three young female city cops had been badly wounded overnight. He heard only the first name, Penny Merris. She was twenty-four years old. The rest of the news report was a blur. It took him nearly fifteen minutes to regain his composure. Every time he closed his eyes he could see was Felicia lying on the ground bleeding from the stump of her right leg.
About nine AM Penny was awake and hurting. Her knee hurt, her ankle hurt, her toes hurt, her whole leg hurt, the right one that had been amputated. She knew her leg was gone, but it hurt. The nurse came in response to her call button. After learning Penny’s complaint she left and returned with medication and administered it. In the next two hours she returned to administer medication to the other two women and to give more medication to Penny. For the three women the day was one full of pain punctuated by shots to ease it. The shots seemed to have much less than the desired effect. They softened the pain but did not erase it. More than once the women asked the nurse when the pain would stop. Each time Leslie Marks responded, “Soon.” She could hardly hold back the tears till she left the room. Each time she looked at Penny she saw herself. Twice during the day she went to the restroom and had a good cry.
