Penny’s brother Paul is also a cop. He finally gets up the nerve to visit his sister.
Her dad sat there with his head down for a minute. “Sir, I’m sorry we met this way. I suspect your son is a good boy with some good upbringing that made a bad mistake. I hope this is the last one. And I’m glad Paul was here to see this. I hope he remembers this as a lesson he got to learn the easy way from someone else’s mistakes. Paul, you take notice, this is exactly how I would have handled this.”
The boy got up, came over to Penny’s dad and handed him some money. “Sir, I am sorry. One of the guys told me she would go along with anything. I know better to believe it the next time. I assure you I will not be in this kind of a mess again.”
“Son, if you really learn from this it is a cheap lesson for all of us.”
“I’ll mail a letter to you to give to your daughter in the next couple of days.”
The letter came two days later. About two weeks later at school Penny saw him with another boy. He was obviously angry. She stepped back and listened. “You dirty bastard. I listened to you. Penny is a great girl. She never put out to you. When I tried she fought like a tiger. You tell anyone else she is easy and I’ll make sure they know you are a liar.”
Penny told her dad about it that evening. He smiled. “I knew he was a good boy who made a mistake.” A few days later he saw the boy’s dad and told him. “I really appreciate your sin doing that. It will make it better for Penny.”
“I’m glad he did it but he should have known better.”
“Yes, but we have all done dumb things.”
“Yes we have.”
Paul thought about it as he went from the car to the station. He wished he could tell Felicia that he would not expect anything she could not give. He realized this was something he would have show by actions, not tell. Golly, he thought, she was something. Nice body, nice face, pretty eyes, sweet voice, and really nice personality. He wasn’t sure if he deserved her. He thought of Penny. It felt funny thinking of his sister that way. She was just as pretty, very nice legs till two weeks ago, a nice face, pretty eyes, sweet voice, and a nice person, except sometimes to a little brother. He smiled, “and she was often nice to a sometimes very mean little brother.”
As he opened his locker he had one final thought, “If what happened to Penny happened to Felicia, how would he handle it?” He pushed the thought out of his mind. Only cops were targets and over a week had gone by since the shootings. The detectives were working on the case. The person would be caught before anything else happened.
