Penny, Barb and Margie are being released from the Hospital.
Brenda, the hostess at the restaurant couldn’t get her eyes off the end of the stumps. They were seated near the front of the dining room and ordered their meals. Just as they were getting their food they saw two police cars enter the parking lot. They stopped in front of the window the women were sitting next to, the officers got out, stood at attention and saluted. That done they got back in their cars and drove off. During their meal this was repeated several times.
Before they finished eating three other city officers entered the restaurant, Bart Donnely, Les Parkins and Jan King. These were the on duty partners of the women when they were shot. All three stayed with their partner during most of the first day after the shooting and in addition to working extra duty without pay to help run leads, all visited in the hospital nearly every day since the shootings. Down deep, all three felt that somehow they were responsible for their partner’s injuries. For Jan the guilt ran higher. She and Barb were rookies together and were assigned as partners after six years of time with other male partners. They were both seasoned officers with good records. They were the first all female car in the city and had been for nearly a year. Commendations and honors had been almost routine for them.
