In anticipation of the three wounded coming home the three partners take it in hand to insure they will have what they need. In the process all three admit they have abused their power as officers more in that one day than in their years on the force.

Bart Donnely, Les Parkins and Jan King had been busy since the shootings.  Barb’s and Margie’s personal cars were picked up earlier in the week and taken to the police garage.  Two kits to add a left gas pedal somehow appeared at the shop and it seemed like a waste for them to just sit on the shelf.  They were installed and both cars were returned to their parking places.  One of the mechanics volunteered to do the installation on his own time.  A check showed Barb and Penny lived in an apartment complex.  Both occupied second floor apartments.  One morning Les and Bart visited two men in first floor apartments in the complex.  They returned to the car and were joined by Jan.  They waited an hour and then paid a visit to the manager of the complex.  They explained how it would he helpful if he could move the two women to apartments on the first floor.  The landlord protested that the rent would go up, this was an unusual thing to do and that it was bad to set a precedent of honoring the request of a tenet to move in the middle of the lease.  Bart pulled a stack of paper out of his jacket pocket and handed it the landlord.  The man studied them.  Bart took them back and held them.  The landlord nodded his head, “Yes.”   Bart tore the papers into little pieces and handed them to the manager.

The manager looked at him  “I think we can make the swap of units, no charge.  There are no first floor apartments available right now but I will see the women will get the first two that became available.”

Bart nodded.  As the three officers left the landlord’s office two men were waiting in line to see him.  As they got in the car to leave Bart looked over at Les.

“As far as I know that’s the first time I have done something that could be called misuse or my power as an officer.  I don’t intend to do it again but didn’t it feel good?”

Les smiled, “That’s true for me too and I know it is for Jan.  I hope it’s the last time we have reason enough to do it.”
