The women go to have their second fitting for their new leg.
He walked out and came back in a minute with a can of coke. “Here, having a cast put on is thirsty work.”
“Golly, thanks. You didn’t have to do that.”
“Nope. I wanted to. That is how we treat out clients. They are here with a bad situation. Anything we can do to make it better is great. Right now you are like a client. I’ll be around the corner. If you need anything I’ll be there. About twenty minutes and you can go home.”
When the time was up he came in. “Ready to go?”
“Got to get my purse and things at the front.”
“OK. Let’s go.”
“Let’s?”
“When we have a newby on this we follow them home. I can’t help you with anything you can do. I’m just to keep you from getting hurt.”
She picked up her purse and some other things. “How am I going to carry that?”
“Do you have a backpack?”
“At home.”
“I’ll carry it to your car. You need to start carrying a back pack.”
“Thanks.”
“Oh, I almost forgot one thing. Here.” He handed her a handicapped tag for her car.
“What’s this for?”
“Put it on your mirror. Here is the card for it. You can park in handicapped spaces till you get the cast off.”
“But. I’m not.”
“When I am in a training slot I only use them if I can’t find a spot close. But there will be times you really need to.”
“OK.”
At her house he helped her to her apartment with her things. As she was opening the door a guy came out of the apartment across the hall. “Syl. What happened to your leg?”
“They put a cast on it.”
“Is it damaged?”
“No. It’s part of my job.”
“Oh. I have dinner ready.”
Henry gave his good-by, gave her a card with his number and told her to call if she needed anything.
