The women return to work – as police – well – almost.
“Do you think the others would want us back?”
“There are two answers to that. Yes they do. And it even if they didn’t it doesn’t matter. Several have asked if we could get you back to help with things. I didn’t ask if they feel sorry for you or themselves, most of them are working lots of overtime. They either look at you coming back as good for them, you or both. It doesn’t matter.”
“We still have therapy sessions and fittings and don’t forget doctor’s appointments. We would have to have time off for them.”
“And we’ll work around them, having you 20 or 30 hours a week is better than not having you. And there is some morale value to having you back. We have cops that are afraid to go out on the street. Seeing that we take care of our wounded helps that.”
“We thought it might be the other way, make everyone nervous seeing us this way.”
“Is it worse for them to see you here, back working or sitting at home?”
“I guess it would be worse for some and better for most.”
“Then check with the doctor, if he says it is OK, then come back.”
They left the chief’s office and dropped in at the surgeon’s office. He saw them briefly, signed a paper allowing them to work a limit of 8 hours a day with the understanding that they would have time off for medical treatment. They called the chief from the doctor’s office and were told to report at 8 AM. They were excited when they returned home, a little more than a month after their injuries they were going back to work.
