Sylvia grabbed her crutches and the chart and stood up.  “If you follow me.”  She started toward the back of the shop.  Heidi was following her.  At the door to the room she stopped, put the chart in the holder and opened it for them.  She followed them into the room.  “I just wanted to say I’m sorry.  I could tell you I had a bad day the last time you were in.  That is true but it is an excuse.  I’m sure it doesn’t matter much but I want to say I’m sorry.  And if I ever do anything like that again take a crutch and hit me.”  Without any other comment she turned and left.

Brittany came in a few minutes later.  Myra Bowman watched as she checked Heidi’s stump.  She wrinkled her brow.  “I really missed it last time you were in.  I didn’t think you would be ready for the casting for another week.  But we could do you now.”

“Then let’s do it.”

“It isn’t that easy.  I know the casting room is tied up till five.  Let’s get you out front and see if we can get you before next week.”

They followed her to the front desk.  Sylvia was handling the schedule for Kim who was out on an errand.  “Sylvia, we need an appointment for Heidi.  We need me, the cast room and someone to help me.”

“Well, you aren’t free till day after tomorrow, and the cast room is full.  After that, there is nothing till her appointment.  What about you staying over tonight for two hours?  The cast room is free.”

”But there isn’t anyone who can stay.”

“Maybe I can’t do it, but if I can, I will.”

“I appreciate you offering, but I need someone who has helped or at least watched.  It isn’t tough.”

“OK.  I can stay on the desk.  Jackie is night on the desk, she has helped with casting.”

“That’s brilliant.  Heidi, can you come back just before five?”

“Sure.”

When the Bowman’s left Brittany smiled, “You did good, now you have one more thing to do that isn’t a hundred percent work.  Call my husband and tell him I will be two hours late.  His cell number is on the list out there.”

“Sure.”

Heidi returned and by six thirty she and her mother were back in the waiting area.  Myra Bowman reached for Sylvia’s hand.  “I think you did have a bad day.  Don’t ever mention it again.  What you did today was impressive.  I just called three of the girls that had chemo with Heidi and they will be coming in here to be fitted.  And I told Brittany too.  You and her are great.”

“Thank you so much.  I have just learned how important this job really is.”

“Well, you tell your boss you need a raise.”

“I just need the job.  The raise will come when I earn it.”

“I’m sure you will deserve and get it.”
