He asks to come back – the probation period is rough.
DAY FIFTY FOUR
Margie pulled Barb off to the side the next morning. “Gary called last night.”
“I hope you told him to buzz off.”
“Well, I almost did. Then I decided to listen to him. We went out. I don’t know yet if I can take him back, I have to think about it.”
“Think hard. Remember the hell he put you through.”
“I know, but it has to be hard for him.”
“And you.”
“I know.”
“Remember he is seeing you with your prosthesis, you look normal. What is he going to do when he sees you without it? And if you get married he sees you that way every day.”
“I guess I can find out about that.”
“How?”
“We’re going out tonight.”
“I told him I wanted to go shopping and have my hair done.”
“You’re kidding. He still was interested in going?”
“Yes. I didn’t tell him but if he can’t handle that we don’t go any further.”
“Good girl, stick to your guns.”
Gary rang the doorbell. Margie opened the door. She was standing there with her crutches. She was not wearing her prosthesis. She was wearing a four inch heel and a skirt that could have as accurately be described as a wide belt. Her stump was in a cutoff nylon and looked so smooth and shiny with a small bump where she knotted the nylon. More than four inches of her stump was visible below her skirt. She had a small back pack.
He looked her over from top to bottom then regained his composure and said only one word, “Wow.”
She turned red and he realized how he was staring at her. “I’m sorry, let’s go. Golly, do you look good tonight.”
“With one leg?”
“With one leg, with one and a third legs, with two legs, you look good. But the way you are dressed, you look so bad it is good.” He stood at the door uncomfortably, finally she said, “Unless you move so I can come out, we aren’t going anywhere. With the crutches I need more clearance.”
