They get the lineup – and the sniper strikes again. This time a shot misses the targeted leg.
In spite of Jan’s wounds, Dean was taken in the first ambulance. Jan could wait, his vital signs were much worse. At the hospital they ascertained that the bullet had exited from Dean’s body, there was a larger hole in his back at his left pelvis. X-rays showed the bullet had fragmented his pubis, passed on through and fractured his left pelvis before exiting. The bone fragments from both hits ripped a dozen holes in his intestines, shredded his descending colon and rectum and punched two holes in his bladder. It was either not an exploding round or it had failed to explode.
The general alert went out. The game plan was simple. All available officers would be moved to cordon off the area. By the time they had the cordon in place the next round of calls went out. There was a shooting behind the courthouse, nearly eight blocks from the first one. There were two women down, 911 operators leaving at the end of the shift. Felicia Barton and Mindy Zehr were taken to the hospital. Mindy was shot first, she was an LAK. Felicia was an RAK. The two women were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Jan’s surgery took less than two hours. They simply removed the damaged flesh from the end of the stump of her right leg, removed four metal bullet fragments, cut the bone properly, shaped the end of it, sewed up the wound and put on the customary cast. Dean was taken to surgery first but his surgery took more than five hours. They pieced together his pelvis and pubic bones and repaired his small intestines. His traverse colon was cut near the middle of his body. The left side of it, the descending colon and his rectum were removed. Dean left the operating room with over a pound of metal inside him to hold him together, a cast from near his waist to his knees to stabilize the bones, a permanent colostomy and a catheter in his bladder to drain it.
