They learn how much each of them care about Felicia.
Paul smiled, “Does everyone that comes down here feel that way.”
“They do, in fact I did when I first came down here. But I have probably saved as many lives from here as I could have as a surgeon. If I do my job right the surgeon gets help in treating the patient.” He led Paul into the room. “I want you to see something, it will be gross now but it will help you later.”
There were three large trays on a gurney, he went over, looked at the tags and turned to Paul. “Come here, I want you to see for yourself why they could not reattach Felicia’s leg.”
He pulled open the lid. Inside was most of a woman’s leg. He picked up a pointer. “See here, the flesh is destroyed, there was nothing to work with. Look at the lower leg, see the gray color? There was no circulation since she was shot.” He closed the lid and picked up an x-ray pouch. He took them to a viewer and turned it on. One set was her right leg, the other the left. He matched them. “See, five inches of bone shattered, the knee cap is missing, no, there it is, it was blown down to the lower leg, there is even more damage from it there. There was no way to save this leg.” He was so clinical in describing the damage.
Then Paul realized he was crying. “Understand. The only reason I showed you is so when she asks why they didn’t reattach it you know. You can honestly answer the question. There was no way. You saw it.”
Paul took him and hugged him, “I know. And I will tell you now if you will let me marry your daughter, I promise I will treat her like the jewel she is.”
“I knew that since I first saw you tonight. You can marry her any time you want to given her consent and she is well enough to handle it.”
“I will give her time but it will be soon.” They shook hands. Paul wrote down some phone numbers and left.
