The parking lot attendant look at the lineup is not conclusive.
Margie called in to the station; she was coming down with a cold. Barb and Penny finally got the parking attendant on the phone about eleven. He had some appointments today, could he wait till tomorrow to come in. Both women disliked the answer but this man was their only contact with the shooter. His input was more important than the timing. They set a time for the following day at eleven. He called back about twenty minutes later, if they could pick him up at his home, he could come in tonight at eight.
They went to the chief. He approved the action provided they use a city cruiser and that they could find a member of the DA’s office to be present. They called the DA and Assistant Lisa Martz was assigned. She asked if she could be picked up at her home and dropped there, the city was a scary place. She did not want to be out on her own.
They called for a car at about two. At five thirty the garage called to tell them that the unit 55 was ready and parked in a space in front of the station. When Barb hung up the phone she looked at Penny, “Who’s going to drive?”
“I drove my dad’s car last week without the left pedal, it was a little awkward, but I got there and back.”
They went down to the car. As Penny got in she noticed the left pedal. Unit 55 had been properly equipped for them without anyone saying anything about it. Barb looked at Penny, “That guy at the garage is something else. He gets one big hug the next time I see him.”
NIGHT FIFTY EIGHT
Barb and Penny drove to Lisa Martz’s house. She was standing inside the door when they arrived. She ran to the car and got in. “I don’t want to be a target.”
Barb started to say something but stopped, there was no doubt, being stationary was a bad thing. It was unlikely that a shooter could hit a moving target.
At the attendant’s home Barb picked up a cell phone and called him. He came right out. He too was moving fast and not stopping. “Sorry to put you out, but I am not being alone in this town at night.”
They drove downtown with little other comment.
