Penny and Barb get involved in another shooting on the way home from the lineup.
Barb heard the report on her scanner on the way back to her house. She apparently must have missed the shooter. She swore. Penny was in the hospital for nothing.
With three injured women in addition to the three from the earlier shootings, the hospital was very busy. The first two new amputees were just leaving the operating rooms when the Norma, Jennifer and Alicia were brought in. The two surgical teams finished one operation each and went on the second ones. Dr. James was called in to do Norma’s surgery. She was put on hold for about a half-hour till he arrived. It was becoming a routine process. You did an x-ray and sent them for an amputation. They were no longer doing the tests to determine if the circulation was good in the lower leg. Norma was awake and lucid most of the time she was waiting. The police talked to the women briefly before they went to surgery. Jennifer remembered seeing a red dot like a laser pointer on Norma’s leg just before the shot. This was something nobody had reported before. Alicia was questioned separately and she mentioned the same thing.
Over the next two days all of those who were wounded and their partners were questioned about the laser. All were pretty sure they had not seen it including Penny and Barb. Both admitted they could have missed it on the first night but they were sure there was no laser sight on the night Penny was wounded the second time. Both of them were looking in the direction the shot came from and both saw a muzzle flash. Barb was adamant. “If I had a laser sight to shoot at I would have poured in five shots. I guarantee you would have know who I was shooting at. The muzzle flash was there but not a good marker.”
