Paul stopped in to see his sister just before she checked out of the hospital.  Now he was headed to Felicia’s room.   She was awake.  Her pain was more than physical.  As he walked in she turned her head away from him.  He walked over to her bed and went around on the other side where he could see her face.  “I want to talk to you.”
“Go away, I don’t want you to be saddled with a cripple for the rest of your life.  Go find yourself another girl.  Get a good one with all the pieces.  You deserve better than me.”

“First, you aren’t a cripple and even if you were I want you.”

“How can you want me?  You liked my legs.  Now my right leg is gone.”

“But it is you I love not just your legs.  And you still have one of them.”

“But I can’t do a lot of the things we discussed.”

“First, you can’t be sure you can’t do those things and even if you can’t plans change.  That is the way it is when two people care about each other.  When things happen they change to accommodate.”

“But what can I do?”

“Want to hear a real blast?  I just saw my sister leave the hospital.  Second gunshot wound in three months for her.  Shot in the leg.”

“God, your sister got shot again?  How bad is she?”

“Well, she managed to get her leg blown off again.   She was out chasing this shooter and got in the open he blew her leg off?”

“And she is out of the hospital already?”

“Yep, he shot her in the artificial leg.  She has one really sore stump it is one big bruise.  The other leg has a couple of minor wounds but she’ll be fine in a few weeks.”

“Fine, you say.  She is missing a leg and you say she is fine.”

“I don’t mean it that way, yes she is missing a leg, yes it will make a difference in her life but she is going to live.  And I guarantee she is going to live it up.  Do you know what she did the day she got out of the hospital after the first shooting?  She wrestled me to the living room floor to prove she still could.  With one leg, a cast on her stump, on her crutches, drugged up and still hurting, she pinned me.”
