Barb picks up Unit 55 at the garage and also picks up a guy.

“You were kind to me.  I had no choice but to return that kindness.  Even without that it was the right thing to do.”

“You could have flashed your police ID that night and we would have let you go without anything but the sobriety test.”

“I didn’t want to do that.  It would be taking advantage of my job and position.  I hate people who do that.”

“I like that attitude.  We have some who want to have us let them go because they are city councilmen when they are dead drunk.  That makes it bad.  But you were a little tired and you did get coffee as we suggested and you didn’t show up somewhere else as a problem.”

“I know.  I hate people taking advantage of power.  When I took the job in the garage I promised myself that I would never use my position for personal gain of any kind.”

“I just wish some of the city officials would see that.   Now for the reason I am here.  You know what I promised the girls I would give you for fixing our cars?”

“No.  But you don’t have to do anything.”

“I know I don’t.   But I want to.  I promised to give you a kiss.  But now that I have met you I think I might change my mind.”  He frowned.  He would have been very pleased with the kiss as a thank you.  She continued.  “Are you married?”

“No.”

“Steady girl?”

“No.”

“Occasional date?”

“Not recently.”

“Good.  Great.  Fantastic.  I’m sorry, I meant, good.  Can we go out some night?  That way I can give you at least one kiss and maybe a hug or two also, of course if that is fine with you.”

He looked at her stunned.  “You mean you would go out with me?  A pretty girl like you with me, a mechanic?”

“Yes, and yes, and if you call me pretty one more time I’ll be forced to buy the dinner.”

“I’m not asking for dinner.  I just think you are about the prettiest girl in town, I mean, I can’t think of one that is prettier, or even close.  I wanted to ask you out months ago, long before the shooting, but the guys down here laughed at me and told me you wouldn’t go out with me.  They said a classy lady like you wouldn’t go out with any mechanic.”

“I’ll go out with you.  I’d be glad to.  You’re the first guy in ages that has been nice to me just to be with me.”  She gave him her address and phone number. “Call me tonight. Let’s see if we can get together.  I’m free just about any night if you are.  My social calendar is very open.  And thanks much for the work on the cars.”  She pulled him down and kissed him, “I changed my mind, for now, call that a down payment on what I owe you.  We’ll try for the additional installments later.”  She took the key to unit 55 and left.  One of the day mechanics was standing at the doorway when she left.

When Penny got into the car Barb was still smiling.  “What’s up with you?”

“I have a date for tonight.”

“Who?  Did the guy you were going with dump the red head with the long legs and big hooters?”

“No.  I’m done with that creep.  Even if he comes back crawling on all fours I’m sending him packing.  No, this guy is really nice.  He is a gem.  I fell in the garage and he helped me up.  It’s the mechanic that fixed our cars.  He is really nice.”

“Boy you sure pick them up fast.”

“What about Jack, the guy from the ambulance?”

“Touché.”

“If he is half as nice as the mechanic he is a gem.  Hang on to him.”

“Guaranteed.  He is.”

They rode to the coffee shop in silence
