Mindy swung her leg over the side of the bed, placed her crutches under her arms and headed into the hall.  She had to get her strength back and exercise was the place to start.  She made three trips to the central station and back.  On the third one she heard her phone ringing.  When she picked it up it was Felicia.

“Oh, Mindy.  I was so afraid, I called four times and you didn’t answer.”

“Thanks for caring, but don’t worry, I have something to live for, something I didn’t have yesterday.  In fact there are probably a dozen reasons and you are one of them.  Your call just makes me more likely to call if I need help.  Someone does care.”

“Oh thank God you are getting better.  I was so afraid.  Can you get in touch with Jan King?”

“Why?”

“I got a call from one of my college professors, I am taking some courses and he called to let me know that I could make up the back work.  I was afraid I would have to repeat.  He’s quitting teaching there at the end of the semester.  They’re looking for a replacement.  I think I saw something honoring Jan on getting her Masters Degree.  Maybe she could qualify.  It isn’t being a cop but it may be the next best thing.”

“Let me give you her number it will mean more coming from you.”

Felicia called Jan as soon as she hung up.

“Jan King.  Can I help you?”

“Jan, you probably don’t know me, I’m Felicia Barton.”

“Felicia, from 911?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve often wanted to meet you and tell you how much we like how you do your job.  I am sorry to say I never got to it.  What can I do for you?”

“You’re kind.  I just do what I need to do.”

“But you seem to be on top of it.  We like you and Mindy on the desk.  The calls are passed better.  But what can I do for you?”

“Well, you already have done it but let me see if you are interested in something.”

“If it’s marathon running, I’m a little out of form.”

They both laughed.  “No, I found a job that is going to open soon.  Do you have your Masters?”
