Jan is surprised and awed by a call.
“Thank you. I hadn’t expected that.”
“You deserve it. Thank you for applying. I can remember you from classes. Back then I knew you were going to be good. It is a pleasure to turn my classes over to someone who will expect excellence and instill good values. I will pass to you all files of my notes, syllabus and tests. I hope they help you get started on your new career. I wish it weren’t under these circumstances but I still wish you the best.”
“Thanks.”
“Assuming all goes well when you come back to do the other paperwork, we’ll talk some. Right now I have to get to my next class and the other two here need to go talk to the provost.”
They started out of the building together. At the doorway he noticed the empty handicap space. Like a sergeant he asked, “Where pray tell me is your car?”
She meekly responded, “Down there?”
“Give me the key.”
“You have a class.”
“I have time to take care of someone. You know that. Which car is it?”
“The blue Ford.” She handed him the key.
He went to the car and pulled it to the curb where she was standing and got out. “Now you get a sticker, tomorrow and get it on and you take care of yourself.”
“I don’t want to be.”
He cut her short, “You don’t want to be a burden so you park a hundred yards away so something can happen to you. Let this be the last time.”
“OK, do you have one minute?”
“Sure.”
“Two things concern me about teaching, actually a lot of things concern me, like do I know enough, but the first things are should I wear my prosthesis to teach or not and how am I going to handle an hour on my foot at a time?”
He smiled, “I knew these two questions would come out sooner or later. As for your prosthesis, you didn’t wear it today, it made sense to not wear it. If it makes sense, wear it. If not, don’t. If you have a lot of walking crutches are probably better and the leg is just weight to carry. I suggest you stick with the lighter leg as much as possible. Now let’s take the second question. I sit on tables, lean on cabinets when I get tired. I suggest you see what I did about three years ago when I sprained my ankle. I got a high stool and put it in the room I use most. I could slide up on it and be comfortable.”
“Thanks. I’ll let you get to your class.”
He handed her a card, “Here’s my phone numbers and e-mail address if you need something, call or write. I answer mail almost every day but if you need to talk, call.” He turned to walk away and then turned back. She was sliding into the car.
He went over to her. “Could you give me about a half hour?”
“Sure. Doing what?”
“Come over to 124 Campbell. You still remember where that is?”
She smiled, “Sure.”
“I’ll meet you there.”
