Paul Merris is teamed with Jack Farley to keep Jack out of trouble.

“Don’t worry about it.  I’ll get the bastard.  If I pass out the bleeding will slow down on its own.  It’s hard to bleed to death once you pass out.”  With that three shots were fired from the alley.  They hit the cruiser behind them.  Jack saw the flashes and fired into the alley, emptying his clip.  He had already pulled another from his pocket and laid it next to him.  He loaded it as soon as he fired the last shot. “He sticks his head out where I can see him he’s a dead man.  This guy is gonna learn right here and now that if you shoot old Jack or his partner you get a belly full of led.  I saw him. He’s still in there.  I can see him.  There he is.”  He fired three more shots into the alley.  “Give me a spare clip.  I’m down to one full one and the one in the gun.  I want to be able to lay down some fire if he moves.  Get your gun out and look down that alley.  Your eyes are better than mine.  I think he is laying on the ground back there.  I think I got him, but in case he gets up I want some fire power.  Neither of us are gonna be able to get out of his line of fire if he gets up and rushes us.”  Paul pulled a clip out of his pocket and gave it to Jack.  By then unit 63 arrived and they started securing the scene.  Unit 67 arrived just behind them.  Lou Bristol and Candace Nugent of 63 stayed with Jack and Paul the others started the search.

Dan Burrows carefully went into the alley moving from one place of cover to the next.  He had seen the two men laying there with a missing leg.  He had no intention of doing anything that would raise the count to three.  Dave Fry was following him also picking his way carefully.  As they approached the place the alley dead-ended they found a man on the sidewalk.  He was obviously badly wounded.  He had a handgun. Jack had done as he said.  He had hit the guy with three shots in the belly.  Within minutes the area was cordoned off.  Reporters were on the scene before the man in the alley or the wounded police officers were taken away, one particularly bloody picture showed Jack’s leg separate from his body.  Paul was in the picture.  His leg was obviously missing and a pool of blood was obvious.  One of the reporters overheard one of the officers say,  “We got him.”  That was all it took.  The good news was in the morning paper.  The scourge of shootings was over.
