See previous work for detail. This is part two of the first chapter.
The fatigue in his body was growing and he decided that if he climbed all the way into the box maybe he could catch his breathe enough to continue. He lifted his hind leg and the wind forced the box to move left causing the tree sprout in Henry’s grasp to be up rooted and him to fall into the box tree sprout and all.
He was now whirling around in the box floating down stream toward Simon and the pups. He was relieved but panicked by the turn of events. How could he stop the box from spiraling with the wind? How would he stop the box from floating past Simon and the pups? He knew they were on the right side of the stream as they had been dodging its edges on the way toward Oaks Hollow.
He began to panic and in his state he doubled pawed the tree sprout and thrust it into the water hoping to stop the craft. His actions however caused the craft to steady and rotate toward the left side of the streams bank. Relieved to have some control over the craft he leaned to his left which to his amazement spun it toward the right side of the stream. He could hear the distress call from Simon and the pups in the distance and knew he had to act fast to stop the craft in time to save them. The wind assisted him with his plight by blowing him up to the streams right bank. He doubled pawed the sprout and plunged it into the earth which made the craft swirl and come to a rest on the bank. He started to put his hind leg out in an effort to get out and drag the craft down stream to Simon and the pups but as soon as he did the wind lifted the craft in such a way that Henry feared he would lose the craft. He quickly put his leg back into the craft. He would have to go further down the stream and get as close as he could to Simon and the pups in order to have a chance at saving them.
He pulled the sprout back up from the earth and used it to push off back into the stream. He was confident now that he could stop the craft but concerned how to get Simon and the pups into it once stopped. Their distress call was getting louder as Henry was pushed down stream by the raging wind. He waited until the distress call resonated to its loudest point before he maneuvered the craft to the right side of the streams bank. He double pawed the sprout once again and spiked it into the earth effectively preventing the craft from going any further down stream. He called out to Simon hoping he would be able to hear him over the storm and the pups squealing the distress call.
