“Jenny, what’s wrong?” Cree called out as she passed her. She looked over to see Denny standing a few feet away. Cree ran up to him with fire in her eyes. “What the hell did say to her?”

“Why do you think it was me?” Denny asked defensively.

“Oh, could it be that you’re the only one around, and it takes a lot to get Jenny to cry like that.”

“We were just talking, and I asked her if she was going to the dance.”

“It had to have been more than that,” Cree said. “Look, Denny. I know you wrote Jenny that letter. Reese told me you did. So, what’s the deal? Are you just playing around with her feelings? Because if you are…”

“Cree, would you shut up and listen for a moment,” Denny snapped at her. “I like Jenny, a lot, more than any girl I’ve ever met.”

“Then why don’t you just tell her?” Cree asked.

“Because if I did she wouldn’t believe me. I have to show her.”

“So you wrote her that letter and…”

“Cree, I need you to do me a favor.” Cree looked inquisitively at him and a little confused. “You have to get Jenny to come to the dance. I’ll handle the rest, and don’t tell her I wrote the letter.”

“And why should I help you? I know your reputation around this school. I know how you play with the girls around here. So why should I trust you with my best friend?”

“You don’t have to trust me. I never gave you any reason to, but believe me I would never hurt Jenny.”

Cree thought long and hard. “Ohhh, if you weren’t best friends with my boyfriend.” She let out a frustrated scream.

“Thanks, Cree,” he said as she walked off.

She ran back to her dorm to see about Jenny. She ran upstairs and knocked on Jenny’s door. “Jenny, it’s Cree,” she called from outside her door. “Can I come in?”

“Go away!” Jenny cried.

Cree noticed the door was cracked. She opened it enough to see Jenny laid out on her bed crying. Cree looked angry at seeing her like that.
