Chapter 2: Part three – Gretchen recovers after the incident with the dark personality.
Colin sighed as he gazed blankly at his notepad. His brain was exhausted. Sometimes he wished he had chosen a different profession. He reached for the Coke bottle on the table next to his armchair. His eyes glanced at the TV where the 5-day forecast was flashing onto the screen.
They were calling for rain tomorrow. Colin took a slow sip of Coke, already starting to turn warm. Then he tried to focus back on his notes.
The crisp ring of the telephone broke his concentration, much to his relief. Yes, Colin thought, an interruption! He nearly spilled his Coke as he grabbed at the phone.
“Colin,” the bubbly voice on the other end was filled with excitement, “I think I’ve got something!” Colin felt a bit of excitement leak through his body. Ashley’s emotions were always contagious even when she wasn’t physically in the room. He hurriedly found an empty sheet on his notepad.
“Really? Great! I’m ready, shoot.”
“In one of the medical e-zines that I subscribe to, I found an article from a few weeks back that just happens to be about people like your client! Apparently, she’s not the first. There have been several cases found. Somehow these people have extra DNA stored in their cells, and upon the meeting of certain environmental conditions are able to completely change their cells in an instant using the stored DNA. They are labeling these patients with the ability of genetic metamorphosis as Genomorphs. There’s a name of a doctor and the hospital he works with. I’m sending you an e-mail right now with that info.”
“Ash, have I ever told you how amazing you are?” Ashley laughed, light and warm.
“You keep saying things like that Colin, and before you know it we’ll be dating yet.” A fleeting thought crossed Colin’s mind, why aren’t we dating? It vanished quickly though as his eyes fell on the TV.
“Breaking News” was flashing across the top of the screen.
“A strange turn of events has led to the possible capture of the Bloody Mary vigilante. Police are not saying anything officially, but have promised a press conference in about 30 minutes. Witnesses here are saying they believe it is Bloody Mary because the woman who fell out of the window had black hair and lips but now as she is being loaded into the ambulance is clearly a brunette. They are taking the still unidentified woman to St. Mary’s Hospital, and will be holding the press conference there as well.”
