This was the man whom she had made love with such a passion as she had never know before and never known since, and this was the man who made her feel like she was flying on air every time he made love to her.

This was the man whom she had made love with such a passion as she had never know before and never known since, and this was the man who made her feel like she was flying on air every time he made love to her. His smile was the same however, and if only it had not been she could have kept her heart where it had remained since their last meeting 20 years and 3 months to the very day they had first met, when she was only 30yrs old. Now she was 50, the same age he had been when he said he had to let her go. She told him the age difference didn’t matter,  but he was adamant that he was holding her back and she must go out in the world and do things with her life. She was angry and hurt at the time. Why couldn’t they make a success together? why did he want to stay where he was when there was such a big world out there to see?

He smiled as he remembered too. Twenty years he said, and look what a difference it makes. You see how well you’ve don,he said as he gazed round the comfortable chairs, log fires and the oldie world bar. He was congratulating Charlotte on her success when he noticed something which made his heart want to break, except it could not break anymore than it already had and was still left in pieces from when he had let her walk out of his life. It was the month of August when summer was slowly but surely coming to an end, just like their relationship was slowly and surely ending. He noticed that her eyes didn’t dance and shine with the enthusiasm of youth that wanted to reach out to the stars with such confidence. He realised that he at 70yrs of age that he who had so much to look back on yet little to look forward to that he alone was responsible for what had become of her.

He was proud she looked rich and wealthy but what was wealth when there was nothing left inside. He felt her loneliness envelope him. and whilst he saw her smile he noticed her eyes stayed the same, dark and lifeless, just like people had said his had been since the lovely young girl whom had seemed his perfect match had left. Except on odd days like this one, when he was reminiscing as he often did, about the only love he had ever had in his whole life. When he talked about the young girl he once knew, then his eyes would sparkle and his laughter at what antics they used to get up to, would drift across the room for all to hear. And then his friends at the other end of the room would smile and say there goes good old Jimmy, remembering his Charlotte.
