Andrew was once a happy man, but now suffers with the burden of his own memories. When his girlfriend Cali comes to visit after weeks of no contact, she is revealed a terrible secret.
Cali: Andrew, I’m only going to make a phone call.
Andrew: I haven’t paid the bill. I might not have a job anymore.
Cali: I have my cell phone.
Andrew: No doctors.
Cali: No doctors.
Andrew: I’m not crazy.
Cali: You’re not crazy. Sit on the sofa. (helps ANDREW onto sofa, exits SR. As she exits, lights fade to blue, enter JENNY from SL, wearing a red dress, holding a doll and playing with a ball, paying no attention to Andrew)
Andrew: (watching Jenny) Jenny, your hair is like golden straw…(JENNY drops ball and begins to pamper doll)…Jenny, your eyes are like the ocean…(JENNY throws doll into air, catches it, and holds it like a baby)…Jenny, your red dress looks so good on you…(Jenny picks up ball and rolls it offstage. Enter CALI, who stands far SL watching Andrew. She does not see Jenny.)…Jenny, you’re the most beautiful girl in the world…(JENNY holds doll and skips offstage after the ball)…I’m not crazy.
Cali: (Cross to Andrew) Andrew, I just got off the phone with your mother.
Andrew: (covers ears) Not my mother, not my mother, go away.
Cali: Andrew, were you talking to Jenny?
Andrew: Jenny, your hair is like golden straw.
Cali: Andrew, I spoke with your mother-
Andrew: She will never forgive me.
Cali: Forgive you?
Andrew: Mother will never forgive me. Father will never forgive me. Eric will never forgive me. Jenny was a doll. Jenny, stay here while I go-
Cali: Andrew, nobody’s mad.
Andrew: I’m not crazy.
Cali: I asked Leslie-
Andrew: My mother.
Cali: Yes. I asked her about Jenny.
Andrew: Jenny loved mother.
Cali: She said you never had a sister.
Andrew: I have no more sisters. She died because of me.
Cali: No, Andrew, you never had a sister.
Andrew: (trying not to cry) I killed her.
Cali: No, you didn’t kill anyone.
Andrew: I killed someone. I remember a trial. A trial…I think there was a trial.
Cali: Your mother didn’t mention a trial.
Andrew: Does mother not remember my sister?
Cali: You never had a sister.
Andrew: Jenny Carpenter.
Cali: Andrew, your last name is Gibbard.
Andrew: No, it’s Carpenter.
Cali: (trying to remember) Carpenter? Little Jennifer Carpenter, who died in a drunk driving accident?
Andrew: I don’t want to talk about my sister.
Cali: Andrew, Jennifer wasn’t your sister.
Andrew: Everybody hates me.
Cali: Nobody hates you.
Andrew: My sister is dead.
Cali: You never had a sister. (ANDREW looks at CALI, horrified.) She was all in your head.
Andrew: No.
Cali: Yes, and you need to see a doctor.
Andrew: You’re trying to tell me I’m crazy!
Cali: No, Andrew, you just need help.
Andrew: I don’t need help! I’m not crazy, not crazy, Jenny’s dead, Jenny, Jennifer Carpenter…Andrew Carpenter, that’s me.
Cali: Andrew, that’s not you and you know it.
Andrew: Stop it!
Cali: I won’t! This is ridiculous, this is all ridiculous! Come home with me right now, I’ll cook you a meal and you can forget everything. You can’t stay in your apartment forever, not when there are so many people who love you and opportunities waiting, you’re throwing your life away!
Andrew: Jenny’s life was thrown away.
Cali: Jenny doesn’t matter anymore! Jenny was not your sister!
Andrew: (stares at her in horror) Don’t listen to her, Jenny. Cali, sweetheart, I don’t want to talk about my sister.
Cali: Quit talking to her!
Andrew: She hears me! I know she hears me! She’s dead, but she hears me.
Cali: She doesn’t hear you! Stop talking like she’s right there beside you! You’re not crazy!
Andrew: I’m not crazy.
Cali: Then stop acting crazy!
Andrew: (furious) I’m not acting crazy! You don’t believe me! I saw her! She was here! When you called mother!
Cali: I was watching, Andrew. She wasn’t there.
Andrew: Jenny! (falls to knees crying) Jenny, she doesn’t believe me, Jenny, your hair is like golden straw, I’ll die for you, Jenny.
Cali: You won’t! You have a life and you’re throwing it away!
Andrew: You think that I’m crazy, but Jenny understands me. She was young, she was young, she died, I killed her!
Cali: You need to see a doctor, Andrew.
Andrew: (standing)I already told you, no doctors.
Cali: Then come with me, you’re so thin, Andrew, I just want you to eat.
Andrew: I’m not hungry. (holding back a sob, distressed) I can’t go outside, Cali, I can’t go outside, it’s so hectic, Cali, the world spins around me and I stay put! I stay put, Cali! I can’t reach anyone! I’m dead to the world, and I don’t want to be dead, Cali, I don’t want to be dead like Jenny, but I should be, don’t you see? I don’t want to be dead, I don’t want to…
Cali: …You’re not dead, Andrew, the world is just waiting for you.
Andrew: I can’t go back.
Cali: Just come to dinner, and I’ll bring you right back.
Andrew: (calming down, nods) Okay.
Cali: Okay?
Andrew: No doctors.
Cali: No doctors.
Andrew: I’m not crazy.
Cali: Come on.
Andrew: You first. (Cali exits SL. Andrew shuts door and locks her out.) I’m not crazy! (Cali is heard banging on the door, calling his name)
Cali: Andrew! Andrew, let me in! (continues banging and calling his name) Andrew! Andrew, open the door!
Andrew: (falls to knees and holds hands over ears, in a distressed position, and the banging continues.) I’m not crazy! (Lights fade to blue. Enter Jenny, and throughout the next segment she is playing or dancing. Throughout this entire segment, ANDREW does not see her.) The banging! Stop the banging! (cries throughout the next segment, maintaining his distressed position. Jenny stops and looks at him as though she has just noticed that he was there. She slowly and concernedly moves toward him) Stop the banging, stop the banging, the banging drives me insane. I have to stay indoors, have to stay indoors. (Jenny nervously reaches out slowly to touch his shoulder, but withdraws her hand.) It can’t just be all in my head. Jenny, your eyes are like the ocean, you’re the most beautiful girl in the world, Jenny. Stop the banging, stop the banging, I can’t take it anymore. (Jenny looks down sadly and lights fade to black)
