This is a play I wrote for my first graders. At the end of the year we put on a production for the parents to show what the students have learned. Each child gets to pick what they want to do. Five little boys wanted to do a fight between the Minute Men and the Red Coats so I wrote this play for them to do for their parents.

Narrator: The first colonists came to America from Europe in 1607.  They made the 13 colonies.  The colonies were ruled by King George of Great Britain, and everyone was happy.

(show all the people being happy)

Minute Man 1: Long live King George!

Minute Man 2: Yeah!

Narrator: Then in the 1760’s King George put a tax on the tea.  This made everyone sad and angry.

(show everyone sad and angry)

Minute Man 2: Why do we have to pay so much for tea?

Minute Man 1: This isn’t fair!

Minute Man 2: The King can’t make us pay taxes!

Minute Man 1: Only Americans can tax Americans!

Narrator: Though the colonists were very angry, they did not want to fight the British.  In 1773 they dumped all the tea into the Boston Harbor.  This became known as the Boston Tea Party.  King George got very mad and he sent his army to America to make the colonists do what he wanted.  These soldiers were called Red Coats.

Red Coat 1: We will squash those colonists like bugs!

Red Coat 2: Yeah, cause nothing can stop us.  We are the greatest army in the world!

Red Coat 1 and Red Coat 2: Yeah!

Narrator: The colonists formed small armies in their own towns.  These armies were called Minute Men.  One town the Minute Men were in was called Concord.

(show the Red Coats marching)

Red Coat 2: Let’s go men!  These Minute Men can’t really fight.

Red Coat 1: We’ve taken Lexington and now we’ll take Concord!

Narrator: In Concord, Paul Revere had sounded the alarm “the Red Coats are coming, the Red Coats are coming!”  When the Red Coats finally arrived, the Minute Men were ready.

(show the Minute Men getting ready to fight)

Minute Man 1: There they are men!

Minute Man 2: Stay steady!

Minute Man 1: Don’t fire unless they fire at you first!

Narrator: The Red Coats entered Concord and were shocked to see 450 Americans ready to defend the town.

(show Red Coats being surprised)

Red Coat 2: What do we do now?

Red Coat 1: Where did they get so many men?

Narrator: The two armies faced each other.  One Red Coat fired.  A Minute Man–Captain Isaac Davis died.  This became known as the shot heard around the world.

(show the Red Coats and Minute Men fighting)

Narrator: The Red Coats retreated.

(show the Red Coats running away)

Red Coat 1: Retreat!  Retreat!

Minute Man 1: We scared them boys!

Red Coat 2: Run for your lives!

Minute Man 2: Americans win!

Narrator: This was the start of the Revolutionary War.
