Ghazal is an important genre of Urdu literature which was evolved in succession of the qasida’s part first called as “Tashbeeb”.Ghazal is very unique in its format and subject. Subtlety and innovative imagination is its basic feature. Ghazal did not allow any change in its structure so it survived and surpassed all genres of urdu poetry. Ghalib called it a narrow passage of expression(tangnae ghazal) but expanded its scope of subjects. Iqbal also enhanced the power of expression and subjects through the support of Persian language. He brought it out of the pure romantic pedigree of subjects. So both the poets introduced various subjects of philosophy and tasawwuf without effecting its main component of “taghazzul”.Both legends used the Persian tradition already existed which had been evolved through centuries by mystic poets.
Here I give a translated version of a Persian Ghazal of Allama Iqbal.
علامہ اقبال کے شعری مجموعے”زبور عجم” سے ایک خوبصورت ترین غزل
ما از خدا گم شدہ ایم او بہ جستجوست
چون ما نیازمند و گرفتار آرزوست
We are lost from God and he is in search of us(the human beings) , like us He is needful and after desires.
گاہی بہ برگ لالہ نویسد پیام خویش
گاہی درون سینہ مرغان بہ ھائو ہوست
Some times He writes His massage on the leaves of Tulips and sometimes He reflects Himself in the songs of birds.
در نرگس آرمید کہ بیند جمال ما
چندان کرشمہ دان کہ نگاہش بہ گفتگوست
He appeared in Narcissus (Nargis) to see our beauty. He is such a miracle performer Who speaks with His eyes.
آہی سحرگہی کہ زند در فراق ما
بیرون و اندرون،زبر و زیر و چار سوست
The universe in all its dimensions is full of the early dawn sighs which He performs in our separation(Firaq) .
ہنگامہ بست از پئے دیدار خاکئی
نظارہ را بہانہ تماشای رنگ و بوست
He made all arrangements (of universe) just to see the men(made of earth).He appeared in beautiful vistas to see the beauty of His(created) universe.
پنہان بہ ذرہ ذرہ و نا آشنا ہنوز
پیدا چون ماھتاب و بآغوش کاخ و کوست
He is hidden in every particle of the universe but yet to be seen, He is evident like sun and mountains.
در خاکدان ما گہر زندگی گم است
این گوہری کہ گمشدہ مائیم یا کہ اوست
In the earth made structure of the human beings the essence of life is hidden, This hidden essence is we or He.
(Translation was very difficult because of the mystic philosophy of Ham-e-Oost and take it as a venture of understanding a poetic masterpiece)
