A poem about a child who is being called by her mother and returns home safely.

A Child is Missing – Susan Varo 5-28-1996

This afternoon

as I was listening

to a mother calling

to a child that is missing

For a child to be gone

on this gray day

your mother is calling

don’t turn away

A mom calls from the window

not far from mine

seeking the child who’s missing

she is trying to find

She called out once again

then she called out no more

I heard the door slam quickly

the child lives next door

There’s nothing more frightening than when a child wanders off. Even for a moment you feel your heart pounding outside of your chest. So very scary for a mother
