A duck and her ducklings are vulnerable when they cross our streets.
Fluffy yellow ducklings follow
Their mother in a straight line
Across a busy highway
And I fear that something
Terrible will befall them
- – -
The traffic zooms by
Going at full speed
The drivers are unable
To do anything
About these poor duckling’s plight
- – -
I wonder why this duck
Is taking such a risk
With her ducklings
And doesn’t know better
For it’s dangerous
To cross such a highway
- – -
The duck
Was focused on
Leading her young
To a pond just across
The freeway
- – -
Sadly
Only three of the six ducklings
Will make it across

The duck was frantic
While looking back sadly
As her ducklings laid squashed
On the black asphalt
- – -
The duck quacked hysterically
But that was all
She could do
As their steps quickened
To get the others out
Of the line of the oncoming traffic
- – -
It was a great loss
To this duck
That started viewing
All traffic as predators
