This poem is dedicated to all fathers who cherish, enjoy, and appreciate their roles as fathers. Most of you may be able to empathize with the sentiments within the poem below which is written from the standpoint of a father. And to those who experienced similar circumstances depicted in this poem, it is my humblest desire to capture the essence of your journeys and emotions as a father. Happy Father’s Day to all.
That day at the hospital
I kept pacing its white corridors
anxious and apprehensive
yet too excited to sit still.
And who wouldn’t be?
After two aborted pregnancies
and a heartbreaking stillbirth,
I was certainly hoping
that you and your mother
would finally make it.
Then I heard your earsplitting cry
announcing your entrance
into this world and into our lives.
And when eventually
I saw you and carried you in my arms
you gave me a sensation
too amazing for words
and too marvelous I almost cried.
You have made it, child
you have conquered the odds,
you were indeed meant to be
the one to carry the magic wand
to make me experience
what I desired most in this life – fatherhood
Now, after ten wonderful years
of having you in our lives
I still give you that promise
I vowed to you
the first time I held you in my arms.
I would be your father
in every sense of the word –
protector, provider, counselor, guide, friend.
And as we celebrate Father’s Day
I know your heart also bursts
with so much love and gratitude for me.
But I want you to know
that I’m more than thankful to you
for coming into my life
for without you,
I would not be celebrating this day.
Thank you very much for making me a father.
