The need to see through new eyes what has become too familiar to our own.

Familiar, comfortable, well worn

It is easily overlooked

As it sits there unassuming

near a stack of books

With accustomed gaze refocused

New value is seen within

Weathered finish now uncovered

As an aged glow settles in

A piece of furniture we’d value

If this we now described

But of person close and known to us

We often don’t abide

A chipping at the surface

Often needing to take place

To remind of treasure hidden there

Behind familiar face

Loved this, Katie – how easy to become familiar (especially in relationships) – thank you for a reminder to keep re-focussing & appreciating.

thanks, Katie – this flowed really well and made a true and important point:

    “With accustomed gaze refocused
    New value is seen within”

    nice one – revivor

I must echo revivor here on both points. Nice flow and a lovely line there.

What a wise and lovely poem!! So easy to forget the true value of those around us every day until it is too late. Thanks for the reminder.

this is so true, we do take those close to us for granted, I like this a lot.

What a wonderful way to describe the difference between looking and seeing.

Katie, you have written a very nice poem….very smooth reading. I like the message….too often we either glance to quickly or or get too close to appreciate the bigger picture with all its detail.

    ‘Too often we don’t abide’
That line struck particularly, for we arerefocusing through chipped eyes ourselves. Good work, here.

You have expressed it beautifully, thanks. Love your choice of words.
