We can collect so much clutter over the years that when removal day looms the sight of it can be daunting.

I climbed into the dusty attic

For the first time in many a year,

And there before me to my dismay

Was so much junk that I just had to clear.

 *

The time had come to downsize,

And no way was there room for this mess

In our tiny new two bed-roomed cottage

And it was causing me much untold stress.

Image via Wikipedia

*

Thirty years of rubbish had piled up

And was threatening to fall through the door.

All the ‘useful’ things I had put aside

Were now cluttering up the floor.

*

Crockery collected for growing sons

I didn’t have the heart to throw out,

Despite the fact they now lived away

And their need for it seemed in some doubt.

Image via Wikipedia

*

Toys and books and boxed up games

All had to be cleared away,

And the railway track and racing cars

Needed good homes without delay.

Image via Wikipedia

*

Now the time had come to be strong

And fill black plastic bags to the brim

In the hope that once the job was completed

The attic wouldn’t look quite so grim.

Image via Wikipedia

*

The work was not at all pleasant

As spiders undisturbed for so long

Started scuttling across the floor boards

Into places they did not belong.

*

Finally the work was accomplished

And for disposal there were so many sacks,

But I knew that once they’d been collected

I would finally be able to relax.

Thats great Christine, my other half goes mad with me as i tend to keep things \’just in case\’ and they get put away and only come back out when they get thrown away! God help me if we had to move :)

    Best wishes Aaron x

Those junks of course, collecting many unforgettable memories throughout the time, and hopefully they’ve been settling to their suitable places. “liked it”

CR…Great write and read…but shame on you for this awful reminder that I need to be doing the same thing!!! You sound just like my wife who has laid down the law…nothing comes into the house unless I take something out…wonder why that rule only applies to me??? But seriously we (or should that be I) do tend to accummulate way too much and if it hasn’t been used or the box hasn’t been opened in four or five years how important is it…it is only memories but means nothing to someone else…Oh, by the way I voted that I like this one of course…now if only I could find that what-cha-ma-call-it – I’m sure I remember packing it away in 1997!!!

  • XXElleXX on May 29, 2010

I have a room full of boxes and stuff I don’t use .. might take it to the Salvos one of these days ;-) I hope your junk became another man/woman’s treasure Christine ~ liked this piece very much :-)

I haven’t gotten myself there yet. I keep wondering what to do with the things I feel would be useful to someone else. I am sure when I really get it together I could call a service to come and pick it up, but gathering it together is the hard part. I like the spider part and the picture. I am always disturbing them here too when I move things and share the apartment with ants.

This reminded of me when my Papa decided to clean out his barn. He had mother and I come down and go through it to see what was trash and what could he take to the auction. Mother and I were in Heaven going through all that treasure. It got divided into 3 piles. Trash, Auction and what mother took home.

It is a lot of work to gather all these things to sell. It also breaks ones heart to part with them even though they might not mean anything personal to the buyer.

  • Anuradha Ramkumar on May 29, 2010

Hey Christine, I know how tough it is to clean up the junk. Whenver I clear junk, I would say no more junk to be stored in this home, but I end up cleaning another set of junk within a month’s time.

  • Karen Gross on May 29, 2010

I love the way you create funny poetry about stuff that we can all relate to. Bits of fabric that I might need for a patch or a craft project someday, boxes that I might need to package a gift or something, bits of yarn, clothes that I hardly wore before my body expanded, but I’m going to lose weight someday and then I will be glad for having kept them….I can so relate!

  • PR Mace on May 29, 2010

  • LoveDoctor on May 29, 2010

I am glad that you got rid of all the clutter. Clutter does accumulate and it creates negative stuck energy. It’s incredible how much junk can get stored up in your garage and utility room without you even realizing it. A great entry with nice flow and rhythm.

Christine, I can feel your pain. I moved into a small apartment a few years back. I still manage to collect clutter but I only have one deck closet for storage so I must clear it often. I’m clearing it out now for my daughter in law to take to the yearly yard sale they have at her grandmothers nursing home.

  • lillyrose on May 30, 2010

Wonderful poem! clearing old memories out is alway daunting. I can’t do it with my youngest there he won’t let me get rid of anything!

  • giftarist on May 30, 2010

  • Chris Stonecipher on May 31, 2010

My basement was filled to the ceiling for years until last summer when we remodeled the basement into an office/entertainment room. What a head ache that was. It took us a week to move all the stuff and I found things that I would never use again or forgot we even had.
I enjoyed reading your poem. I am glad you can relax again.

  • mark ramsay on Jun 1, 2010

Like Nick I hope you didn’t throw all my stuff out too, Mum,ha ha. I remember taking a lot of it to the car boot sale. I liked the poem.

  • M J katz on Jun 1, 2010

It’s amazing how we can collect so much ‘junk’ through the years. But getting rid of this special kind of ‘junk’ is so hard to do when there’s so many memories that come to mind with each piece you pick up! I boxed up some ’special junk’ and gave it to my oldest daughter to split with her sister. Now they have the ‘junk’ plus the happy memories of when they gave me these things that might not be worth much to the rest of the world but are irreplaceable and beyond value to me! :)

  • S A JOHNSON on Jun 1, 2010

    Stuff can really pile up!

  • Starpisces on Jun 1, 2010

very nice one again. I once wrote about the clearing of clutter (including the clutter of my mind)…I have many junk too.. when I clear something, to me is an “achievement” because it’s not easy to clear things as what we think, we also need “courage”, as we have the phobia of regrets later (for my case), but due to space constraint, we have to let go…
    :D

  • My4everscotland on Jun 1, 2010

Great write Christine, I am the same, just can not seem to throw away my memories good or bad, but with your inspiration maybe..
    but probably not. :)

  • Domenico Cigliano on Jun 2, 2010

I think it’s amazing and wonderful that you have been in one place long enough to accumulate so much interesting stuff.. thank you for sharing your emotions as you went through it all.

  • zoeyclark on Jun 2, 2010

Unfortunately my room is such mess- and although it only has a mess for about 10 years, I would rather appreciate an attic for storage because most aren’t junk but stories and clothes…

  • bellatwix on Jun 2, 2010

When I look at the junk in my Aunt’s house, I think it will take her 25 years to get rid of 25 years of accumulated junk. hahaha.

  • V rank on Jun 3, 2010
