While watching John Steinbeck’s heartbreaking play “Of Mice and Men” at the Walnut Street Theater here in Philadelphia, there were actually people in the audience laughing. Not little children but adults. This really upset me. So whenever I have strong feelings, I write a poem.

I went to see a play today
John Steinbeck’s of mice and men
The audience surprised me though
Didn’t they understand?
I sat with tears rolling down my cheek
George’s heart ache touched my heart
Lenny’s innocents put a lump in my throat
Cause I knew he would soon depart
The audience laughed at Lenny’s words
As if it was a joke.
I wonder how the actor felt,
The one who played Lenny
To have an imbecile audience laugh
Every time he spoke.

It must be hard being a live stage actor when you audience doesn\\\’t get it. How hard to give a funny line and hear no laughter or to give a sad line and hear laughter. I didn\\\’t see the play but I did see the movie with Lon Chaney Jr playing Lenny and it made me cry
