I had Edgar A. Poe on my brain, I love his work.
Sleeping soundly in her bed, she awoke to the sound a tapping, rapping at her window
Believing it to be just the wind she turn over and closed her eyes once more
Again the rapping and tapping were upon her window
removing her sheets, she shuddered at the cold, brisk air
she peeked through the blinds but nothing
not a branch nor a gust of wind
puzzled she sat down and again she heard the noise
this time she opened the window and in flew a raven
the ebony bird stared at the woman
she laughed softly as her blue eyes stared back at the bird
as expecting it to say ‘nevermore’
the raven continued to stare
not moving a feather
not knowing what to do,she went back to bed
and the raven just perched there upon her headboard
continued to stare at her with piercing yellow eyes
two weeks later
inside an cherrywood oblong box
lied the maiden
her dark raven hair surronded her like a halo
and her blue eyes will never again glance upon the light of day
her family in mourning
clad in all black
upon the windowsill perched a raven
his eyes gazed upon the coffin
and he turned to fly away
and whispered
‘Nevermore’
